uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

לָרֶ֣דֶת מִצְרַ֔יִם

to,go_down Miʦrayim/(Egypt)

Isaiah says to descend to Egypt because that was the customary way of speaking about traveling from the highlands of Canaan to the lower river basin of Egypt. Use a natural way of referring to traveling downward in your language. Alternate translation: [down to Egypt]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

וּפִ֖י לֹ֣א שָׁאָ֑לוּ

and,mouth_of,my not asking

Yahweh is using my mouth to represent himself and his counsel. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression from your culture or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [but they did not ask me]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / reduplication

לָעוֹז֙ בְּמָע֣וֹז פַּרְעֹ֔ה

to,reach_safety in,the_refuge_of Parˊoh

Isaiah is repeating forms of the word strong in order to intensify the idea that it expresses. If your language can repeat words for intensification, it would be appropriate to do that here in your translation. If not, your language may have another way of expressing the emphasis. Alternate translation: [to take refuge in the protection of Pharaoh]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

בְּמָע֣וֹז פַּרְעֹ֔ה

in,the_refuge_of Parˊoh

Yahweh is speaking of Pharaoh’s power as if it were a stronghold, a fortified place of military protection. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [in Pharaoh’s protection]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

בְּצֵ֥ל מִצְרָֽיִם

in,the_shadow_of Miʦrayim/(Egypt)

Yahweh is speaking of Egypt’s protection as if it were a shadow that provides shelter. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [under Egypt’s protection]
