TSNTyndale Study Notes:

50:10 The test of whether or not an individual fears the Lord is how he or she responds to God’s righteous servant. The same idea is present in Jesus’ claim that no one can come to the Father except through him (John 14:6).
• Those who trust in the Lord have great hope for the future (see Isa 12:2).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

(Occurrence 0) Who among you fears Yahweh? Who obeys the voice of his servant? Who walks in deep darkness without light? He should … his God.

(Some words not found in UHB: who? in/on/at/with,you_all fears YHWH obeys in/on/at/with,voice servant, his which/who walks darkness and,no light to=him/it trust in/on=name_of YHWH and, rely in/on/at/with,God,his )

The servant uses these questions to identify those to whom he is speaking. Alternate translation: “If someone among you fears Yahweh and obeys the voice of his servant, but he walks in deep darkness without light, then he should … his God.”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

(Occurrence 0) obeys the voice of his servant

(Some words not found in UHB: who? in/on/at/with,you_all fears YHWH obeys in/on/at/with,voice servant, his which/who walks darkness and,no light to=him/it trust in/on=name_of YHWH and, rely in/on/at/with,God,his )

Here the word “voice” represents what the servant says. Alternate translation: “obeys his servant”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) walks in deep darkness without light

(Some words not found in UHB: who? in/on/at/with,you_all fears YHWH obeys in/on/at/with,voice servant, his which/who walks darkness and,no light to=him/it trust in/on=name_of YHWH and, rely in/on/at/with,God,his )

The servant speaks of people who are suffering and feel helpless as if they were walking in a very dark place. Alternate translation: “is suffering and feels helpless”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

(Occurrence 0) trust in the name of Yahweh and lean on his God

(Some words not found in UHB: who? in/on/at/with,you_all fears YHWH obeys in/on/at/with,voice servant, his which/who walks darkness and,no light to=him/it trust in/on=name_of YHWH and, rely in/on/at/with,God,his )

These two phrases mean basically the same thing. Here the word “name” represents Yahweh himself. Trusting in God is spoken of as if it were leaning on him. Alternate translation: “trust in Yahweh, his God” (See also: figs-metonymy and figs-metaphor)
