UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: translate-kinship

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יוֹסֵ֤ף אֶל אֶחָיו֙

and=he/it_said Yōşēf/(Joseph) to/towards brothers_of,his

In this chapter, the word brothers refers to Joseph’s older brothers (from different mothers) and his younger brother (from the same mother). Alternate translation: “Then Joseph exclaimed to his brothers in their language,”

אֲנִ֣י יוֹסֵ֔ף

I Yōşēf/(Joseph)

Alternate translation: “I am Joseph, your brother!”

הַע֥וֹד אָבִ֖י חָ֑י

?,still father_of,my living_(creature)

Joseph uses my father to emphasize his relationship with his father. Make sure your translation does not sound like he had a different father than his brothers. Alternate translation: “Is our father still alive?”

וְלֹֽא יָכְל֤וּ אֶחָיו֙ לַעֲנ֣וֹת אֹת֔וֹ

and=not could brothers_of,his to,answer DOM=him/it

Alternate translation: “His brothers could not say a word,”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / infostructure

כִּ֥י נִבְהֲל֖וּ מִפָּנָֽיו

that/for/because/then/when dismayed at,presence_of,his

For some languages it is necessary to put this clause earlier in this sentence and say, “But his brothers were so terrified to see him that they could not answer him.” Do what is best in your language. Alternate translation: “because they were shocked to realize that they were in his presence.”
