TSNTyndale Study Notes:

50:4-11 This is the third of four servant songs (see study note on 42:1-4). The faithful and suffering servant portrays an ideal Israel; the image was realized in Jesus Christ.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) The Lord Yahweh has opened my ear

(Some words not found in UHB: my=master GOD opened to=me ear and,I not rebellious back not turn )

Yahweh enabling his servant to hear and understand is spoken of as if Yahweh opened his ear. Alternate translation: “The Lord Yahweh has enabled me to hear and understand him”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

(Occurrence 0) I was not rebellious, nor did I turn away backward

(Some words not found in UHB: my=master GOD opened to=me ear and,I not rebellious back not turn )

These two phrases mean basically the same thing. Disobeying what Yahweh said is spoken of as if it were turning one’s back toward him. This can be stated in positive terms. Alternate translation: “I obeyed what he said” (See also: figs-metaphor)
