BrTrTake up a lamentation for the mountains, and a mournful dirge for the paths of the wilderness, for they are desolate for want of men; they heard not the sound of life from the birds of the sky, nor the cattle: they were amazed, they are gone.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

9:3-16 The heavenly court was still in session (see study note on 2:9); the divine Judge lectured the people about the charges facing them and justified the severity of the verdict. Jeremiah interrupted the Lord’s speech twice to respond to the Lord’s messages (9:1012).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

(Occurrence 0) Should I not punish them because of these things … should I not avenge myself on a nation that is like this?

(Some words not found in UHB: on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in the,mountains take_up weeping and,wailing and,for pastures wilderness lament that/for/because/then/when laid_waste so_that,no (a)_man passes_through and=not heard sound/voice cattle from,birds the=heavens and=unto cattle/livestock fled gone )

Yahweh uses this question to emphasize that the things that they are doing are so bad that he will not have mercy and stop himself from punishing them. See how you translated similar words in Jeremiah 5:9. Alternate translation: “Because they do these things, I will punish them … I will certainly get revenge for myself against them.”
