OET (OET-RV)“Didn’t I beg you all not to sin against the lad?” Reuben spoke up. “But you wouldn’t listen, so now, see, now we’re having to account for his blood.”

uW Translation Notes:

וַיַּעַן֩ רְאוּבֵ֨ן אֹתָ֜ם לֵאמֹ֗ר

and,answered Reuven DOM=them to=say

Alternate translation: “Reuben reproached them by saying,”

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

הֲלוֹא֩ אָמַ֨רְתִּי אֲלֵיכֶ֧ם לֵאמֹ֛ר

am=not tell to,you_all to=say

Reuben uses this rhetorical question to scold his brothers. Consider what is the best way to communicate that in your language. Alternate translation: “Remember that I told you”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / quotesinquotes

אַל תֶּחֶטְא֥וּ בַיֶּ֖לֶד

not sin in/on/at/with,boy

Consider whether it is more natural in your language to translate this embedded quote as a direct or indirect quote. Also, see how you translated lad in Gen 37:30, and keep in mind that Joseph was seventeen years old when his brothers sold him. Alternate translation: “that you must not harm the boy!”

וְלֹ֣א שְׁמַעְתֶּ֑ם

and=not listen

Alternate translation: “But you did not obey me,”

וְגַם & הִנֵּ֥ה

and=also & see/lo/see!

Alternate translation: “so now, see what is happening:” or “so now look,”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

דָּמ֖וֹ & נִדְרָֽשׁ

blood,his & comes_a_reckoning_for

The phrase his blood refers to Joseph’s death; if you do not translate that phrase literally, you could put the literal text in a footnote since blood is such an important term throughout the Bible. Alternate translation: “we are being held responsible by God for his death!” or “We are getting what we deserve for causing his death!”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

42:22 you wouldn’t listen: Reuben had lost the reins of leadership (see study notes on 42:37; 49:3-4).

OET (OET-RV)“Didn’t I beg you all not to sin against the lad?” Reuben spoke up. “But you wouldn’t listen, so now, see, now we’re having to account for his blood.”

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
