GAL - The Text-Critical English New Testament

THE LETTER OF PAUL TO THE

GALATIANS

Greeting

1Paul, an apostle—appointed not by men nor through man, but by Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead— 2and all the brothers with me, to the churches of Galatia: 3Grace to you and peace from God [fn]the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ, 4who gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father. 5To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

No Other Gospel

6I am astonished that you are so quickly turning away from him who called you by the grace of Christ and turning to a different gospel, 7not that there is another gospel, but there are some who are troubling you and wish to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8But even if we or an angel from heaven [fn]should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed! 9As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone preaches to you a gospel contrary to what you received, let him be accursed!

10Am I now seeking the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.

How Paul Became an Apostle

11[fn]But I make known to you, brothers, that the gospel I preached did not originate with man. 12For I did not receive it from man, nor was I taught it, but I received it by a revelation of [fn]Jesus Christ.

13For you have heard of my former way of life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God beyond measure and tried to destroy it. 14I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people, being far more zealous for the traditions of my fathers. 15But when [fn]God, who set me apart before I was born and called me by his grace, was pleased 16to reveal his Son in me so that I could preach good news about him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately confer with flesh and blood, 17nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away to Arabia and returned again to Damascus.

18Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to become acquainted with [fn]Peter, and I stayed with him for fifteen days. 19But I saw none of the other apostles except James, the brother of the Lord. 20(Now in what I am writing to you, I assure you before God that I am not lying.) 21Then I went into the regions of Syria and Cilicia. 22But I was personally unknown to the churches of Judea that are in Christ. 23They were only hearing people say, “The man who once persecuted us is now preaching the good news of the faith he once tried to destroy.” 24So they were glorifying God because of me.

Paul Accepted by the Other Apostles

2Then after fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus along also. 2I went up in response to a revelation and presented to them the gospel that I preach among the Gentiles, but privately to those who were held in high esteem, to make sure that I was not running or had not run in vain. 3But not even Titus, who was with me, was compelled to be circumcised, even though he is a Greek. 4Now this matter arose because of the false brothers who were secretly brought in, who slipped in to spy on the freedom we have in Christ Jesus, so that they might enslave us. 5But we did not yield to them in submission for even an hour, so that the truth of the gospel might be preserved for you. 6Now from those who were esteemed to be something (what sort of men they once were makes no difference to me; God does not show partiality)—those, I say, who were held in high esteem added nothing to me. 7On the contrary, they saw that I had been entrusted with the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been entrusted with the gospel to the circumcised. 8For he who worked through Peter in his apostleship to the circumcised also worked through me in my apostleship to the Gentiles. 9When James, Cephas, and John, who were esteemed as pillars of the church, recognized the grace given to me, they gave the right hand of fellowship to Barnabas and me, agreeing that we should go to the Gentiles and that they should go to the circumcised. 10They only asked us to remember the poor, the very thing I was eager to do.

Paul's Rebuke of Peter

11But when [fn]Peter came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he was blameworthy. 12For he regularly ate with the Gentiles until certain men came from James. But when they came, he drew back and separated himself because he was afraid of the circumcision faction. 13And the rest of the Jews acted hypocritically along with him, so that even Barnabas was led astray by their hypocrisy. 14But when I saw that they were not walking uprightly in accordance with the truth of the gospel, I said to [fn]Peter in front of them all, “If yoʋ, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, [fn]why do yoʋ compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?”

Justification by Faith

15We [fn]who are Jews by nature and not Gentile sinners 16know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in [fn]Jesus Christ. So we too have put our faith in Christ Jesus so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because no flesh will be justified by works of the law. 17But if we ourselves have also been found to be sinners while seeking to be justified in Christ, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not! 18For if I build up again the very things that I tore down, I show myself to be a transgressor. 19For through the law I died to the law so that I might live for God. 20I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. The life that I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself up for me. 21I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died for nothing.

Law or Faith

3O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you [fn]to keep you from obeying the truth? [fn]In your presence, before your very eyes, Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified. 2Let me ask you this one question: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith? 3Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now trying to be perfected by the flesh? 4Did you suffer so much in vain?—if indeed it was in vain. 5Does God supply you with the Spirit and work miracles among you because you perform the works of the law or because you hear with faith? 6Remember, “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.”

7Therefore you must understand that those who have faith are the sons of Abraham. 8Now the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “All the nations will be blessed in yoʋ.” 9So then, those who have faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.

10For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, because it is written, “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.” 11Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, because “the righteous will live by faith.” 12But the law is not based on faith; on the contrary, “[fn]The person who does these things will live by them.” 13Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree.” 14He redeemed us so that the blessing of Abraham would come to the Gentiles in [fn]Christ Jesus, so that we could receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

The Law and the Promise

15Brothers, let me give an example from everyday life: When a man-made covenant is ratified, no one annuls it or adds to it. 16Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his descendant. Scripture does not say, “And to his descendants,” referring to many, but referring to one man it says, “And to yoʋr descendant,” who is Christ. 17My point is this: The law, which came four hundred and thirty years later, cannot annul a covenant previously ratified by God [fn]to Christ, so as to invalidate the promise. 18For if the inheritance comes by the law, it no longer comes by the promise; but God granted it to Abraham by a promise.

19Why then was the law given? It was added because of transgressions, until the descendant should come to whom the promise had been made. It was ordained through angels by the hand of a mediator. 20Now a mediator does not represent just one party, but God is one.

Slaves and Sons

21Is the law then opposed to the promises of God? Certainly not! For if a law had been given that was able to give life, truly righteousness would have come through the law. 22But the Scripture has confined all under sin, so that the promise might be given on the basis of faith in Jesus Christ to those who believe.

23Now before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, confined until the faith that was to come would be revealed. 24The law, then, was our guardian until Christ came, so that we could be justified by faith. 25But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, 26for you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27For all of you who were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's descendants and heirs according to the promise.

4Now I say that as long as the heir is a child, he differs in no way from a slave, though he is the master of all. 2But he is under guardians and stewards until the time appointed by his father. 3In the same way also, when we were children, we were enslaved to the elements of the world. 4But when the fullness of time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. 6And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into [fn]your hearts, crying out, “Abba! Father!” 7So yoʋ are no longer a slave, but a son. And if yoʋ are a son, yoʋ are also an heir [fn]of God through Christ.

Paul's Concern for the Galatians

8At that time, however, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to beings that by nature are not gods. 9But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how is it that you are turning back again to the weak and worthless elements? Do you wish to be enslaved to them once more? 10You observe days, months, seasons, and years! 11I am afraid for you, lest somehow I have labored for you in vain.

12I plead with you, brothers: Become as I am, because I also have become as you are. You did me no wrong. 13But you know that it was because of a physical infirmity that I preached the gospel to you the first time. 14And you did not despise or reject me even though my physical condition was a trial for [fn]me. On the contrary, you received me as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus. 15[fn]What then has become of that sense of blessing you had? For I testify to you that, if possible, you would have plucked out your own eyes and given them to me. 16Have I now become your enemy by telling you the truth? 17Those false teachers are not zealous for you in a good way, but rather they wish to shut you out so that you will be zealous for them. 18Now it is good to be zealous for a good purpose, and to be so at all times and not just when I am with you. 19My [fn]little children, for whom I am again suffering labor pains until Christ is formed in you, 20how I wish that I could be with you now and change my tone, for I am perplexed about you!

The Allegory of Hagar and Sarah

21Tell me, you who wish to be under the law, do you not listen to the law? 22For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave woman and one by the free woman. 23But the son of the slave woman was born according to the flesh, while the son of the free woman was born through the promise. 24This can be explained allegorically, for these women are [fn]two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; this is Hagar. 25[fn]For Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present [fn]Jerusalem; she is in slavery with her children. 26But the Jerusalem that is above is the free woman; she is [fn]the mother of us all. 27For it is written,

“Rejoice, O barren woman, who has never given birth;

break forth and shout, yoʋ who have never been in labor!

For many are the children of the desolate woman,

more than those of the woman who has a husband.”

28Now [fn]we, brothers, like Isaac, are children of the promise. 29But just as at that time the child who was born according to the flesh persecuted the child who was born according to the Spirit, so it is now also. 30But what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the slave woman and her son, for the son of the slave woman shall not inherit with the son of the free woman.” 31So, brothers, we are not children of the slave woman, but of the free woman.

Do Not Submit Again to a Yoke of Slavery

5[fn]Stand fast therefore in the freedom for which Christ has set us free, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.

2Behold, I, Paul, say to you that if you let yourselves be circumcised, Christ will be of no benefit to you. 3I testify again to every man who lets himself be circumcised that he is obligated to keep the entire law. 4You who are seeking to be justified by the law are alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace. 5For through the Spirit, by faith, we eagerly await the hope of righteousness. 6For in Christ Jesus neither does circumcision have any significance, nor uncircumcision, but what matters is faith working through love.

7You were running well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth? 8This persuasion does not come from him who calls you. 9A little leaven leavens the whole lump. 10I have confidence in you in the Lord that you will adopt no other mindset. But the one who is troubling you will bear his judgment, whoever he may be. 11Now, brothers, if I am still preaching circumcision, why am I still being persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross has been done away with. 12Oh that those who are unsettling you would cut themselves off!

13You were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but serve one another in love. 14For the entire law is fulfilled in this one commandment: “Yoʋ shall love yoʋr neighbor as yoʋrself.” 15But if you bite and devour one another, watch out, or you will be consumed by one another.

The Fruit of the Spirit and the Works of the Flesh

16I say then, walk by the Spirit and you will certainly not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit desires what is contrary to the flesh. These are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the very things you want to do. 18But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 19Now the works of the flesh are obvious: [fn]adultery, fornication, impurity, sensuality, 20idolatry, sorcery, hostilities, [fn]quarrels, [fn]jealousies, fits of rage, selfish ambitions, dissensions, factions, 21envy, [fn]murder, drunkenness, revelries, and the like. I warn you, just as I warned you before, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness, and self-control; against such things there is no law. 24Now those who belong to [fn]Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

25Since we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. 26Let us not become conceited, provoking one another and envying one another.

Bear One Another's Burdens

6Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness, paying attention to yoʋrself so that yoʋ too are not tempted. 2Bear one another's burdens, and in this way fulfill the law of Christ. 3For if anyone thinks that he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. 4But each person should test his own work, and then he will have reason for boasting in regard to himself alone, and not in regard to another. 5For each person will bear his own load.

6Now the one who is instructed in the word must share all good things with the one who instructs him. 7Do not be misled: God is not mocked. A person reaps what he sows. 8For he who sows to his own flesh will reap corruption from the flesh, but he who sows to the Spirit will reap eternal life from the Spirit. 9So let us not grow weary in doing good, for in due time we will reap, if we do not give up. 10Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, and especially to those of the household of faith.

Final Warning and Benediction

11See what large letters I am using as I write to you with my own hand! 12It is those who want to make a good appearance in the flesh who compel you to be circumcised, but only so that they may not be persecuted for the cross of [fn]Christ. 13For not even those who are circumcised keep the law, but they want you to be circumcised so that they can boast about your flesh. 14But as for me, may I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. 15For [fn]in Christ Jesus neither [fn]does circumcision have any significance, nor uncircumcision, but what matters is whether we become a new creation. 16As for all who follow this standard, peace and mercy be upon them and upon the Israel of God.

17From now on let no one cause me trouble, for I bear the marks of [fn]the Lord Jesus on my body.

18The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers. Amen.[fn]
