(Some words not found in UHB: woe ʼAshshūr rod_of anger_of,my and,staff he/it in/on/at/with,hands_of,their wrath_of,my )
Both of these phrases mean basically the same thing. Yahweh compares the king of Assyria to a weapon a person holds in his hand and hits other people with. It emphasizes that the king of Assyria and his army are a tool that Yahweh uses to punish Israel. Alternate translation: “who will be like a weapon in my hands that I will use to show my anger” (See also: figs-metaphor)
10:5–11:16 The primacy of the Lord’s moral law was established in 9:8–10:4; this passage works out the implications of the law: (1) Assyria was only a tool in God’s hands and was therefore as liable to judgment by God as any other nation (10:5-19, 28-34); (2) those among God’s people who trusted in him and obeyed his covenant would be rescued (10:20-27); and (3) God would establish his kingdom on earth (ch 11).
10:5-19 This judgment was pronounced on Assyria because of their ruthless destruction of nations (10:7), blasphemous boasting (10:12), oppression (10:13-14), and self-perceived autonomy (10:15).
OET (OET-LV) woe_to ʼAshshūr the_rod_of anger_of_my and_staff it in/on/at/with_hands_of_their severe_anger_of_my.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
