TSNTyndale Study Notes:

37:21-24 Reuben was perhaps trying to get back into his father’s good graces (35:22) by exercising the leadership of the firstborn (cp. 42:22). Reuben succeeded in saving Joseph’s life, but he failed to earn his father’s favor (37:29-30).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

וַיִּ֨קָּחֻ֔הוּ

and,took,him

If the phrase “grabbed/took hold of him” is made explicit in your translation in verse 23, it can be left implied here in verse 24.

וַיַּשְׁלִ֥כוּ אֹת֖וֹ הַבֹּ֑רָה

and,threw DOM=him/it the,pit,into

See how you translated “throw him” and cistern in verse 20. Alternate translation: “and put him into the well.”

וְהַבּ֣וֹר רֵ֔ק אֵ֥ין בּ֖וֹ מָֽיִם

and,the,pit empty not in/on/over=him/it water

Alternate translation: “Now the well was empty; it had no water in it.” or “The well was empty and completely dry inside.”
