TSNTyndale Study Notes:

38:19 Zedekiah still feared his fellow countrymen—this time, those who had defected—more than he feared the Lord or the Babylonians, so he rejected Jeremiah’s advice. This was Jeremiah’s last message to the king.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

(Occurrence 0) deserted

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said the=king Tsedeqḩ/(Zedek)iah to/near Yirməyāh/(Jeremiah) I afraid DOM the,Judeans which/who they_have_fallen to/towards the=Kasdim lest give DOM=me in/on/at/with,hand,them and,abuse in/on/at/with,me )

escaped trouble and left people who needed help. See how you translated this in Jeremiah 37:13.

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

(Occurrence 0) I might be given over into their hand

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said the=king Tsedeqḩ/(Zedek)iah to/near Yirməyāh/(Jeremiah) I afraid DOM the,Judeans which/who they_have_fallen to/towards the=Kasdim lest give DOM=me in/on/at/with,hand,them and,abuse in/on/at/with,me )

The word “hand” is a metonym for the power or control that the hand exercises. Alternate translation: “the Chaldeans might put me under the control of the people of Judah who have deserted”

(Occurrence 0) for them to treat me badly

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said the=king Tsedeqḩ/(Zedek)iah to/near Yirməyāh/(Jeremiah) I afraid DOM the,Judeans which/who they_have_fallen to/towards the=Kasdim lest give DOM=me in/on/at/with,hand,them and,abuse in/on/at/with,me )

Here the word “them” refers to the people of Judah who have deserted.
