TSNTyndale Study Notes:

6:1-9 The invasion from the north, probably by the Babylonians in 605 BC, was moving toward the kingdom of Judah. As the Lord’s messenger, Jeremiah had the duty of arousing the people so that they could find shelter.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

(Occurrence 0) Yahweh of hosts says this

(Some words not found in UHB: that/for/because/then/when thus he/it_had_said YHWH armies/angels cut_down trees and,cast_up on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in Yerushalayim siege_ramp she/it the=city punished nothing,its oppression in/on/at/with,midst,her )

Jeremiah often uses these words to introduce an important message from Yahweh.

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / personification

(Occurrence 0) Cut her trees

(Some words not found in UHB: that/for/because/then/when thus he/it_had_said YHWH armies/angels cut_down trees and,cast_up on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in Yerushalayim siege_ramp she/it the=city punished nothing,its oppression in/on/at/with,midst,her )

God says this to the army that will attack Jerusalem. The word “her” refers to Jerusalem; cities were often spoken of as if they were women. Alternate translation: “Cut down the trees outside of Jerusalem”

(Occurrence 0) heap up siegeworks against Jerusalem

(Some words not found in UHB: that/for/because/then/when thus he/it_had_said YHWH armies/angels cut_down trees and,cast_up on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in Yerushalayim siege_ramp she/it the=city punished nothing,its oppression in/on/at/with,midst,her )

Siegeworks are either high mounds of dirt or high ramps made of wood that the enemies build outside the city wall in order go on top of the wall and attack the people inside the city.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) because it is filled with oppression

(Some words not found in UHB: that/for/because/then/when thus he/it_had_said YHWH armies/angels cut_down trees and,cast_up on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in Yerushalayim siege_ramp she/it the=city punished nothing,its oppression in/on/at/with,midst,her )

Here “it is filled with oppression” represents people there always oppressing people. Alternate translation: “because its people are always oppressing each other”
