Titos, often spelt (wrongly) as ‘Titus’ in English translations, wasn’t a Jew and didn’t originally believe in God. However, in later times he became a believer and from there, he became a helper in Paul’s work. This letter was sent by Paul there to Titos in Crete where he had been left to look after a group of believers. (Crete is an island that was a part of Greece.)

This letter

There are three main things contained in this letter: Firstly Titos is reminded about what is appropriate behaviour for teachers of believers. It was important that he understand this because those from Crete had many undesirable customs and there were many teachers of false doctrines that would confuse believers.

Secondly Titos was advised Titos how to teach the various groups of believers there, including young men and slaves, along with older men and women. (Then those older women were to teach the younger women.)

Finally Paul advised Titos about how believers should live, including avoiding attacking others, arguing, and splitting the believers into opposing groups. Paul reminded Titos again to follow the teachings of Yeshua the messiah and obey what he commanded us.

Paul wanted it to be known that it’s very important for believers to behave well (1:6; 2:7,14; 3:1,8-9,14) even though doing good things can’t earn their salvation (3:5).

1This letter is from Paul, a slave of God and a missionary of Yeshua the messiah and follower of the faith of the ones that God has chosen.

I share the knowledge of the truth which leads to godliness 2and the expectation of living forever which God promised before time began. And God can’t lie 3but revealed his message in his own time, and I’ve been entrusted to proclaim this by the command of God our saviour.

4[ref]To Titos, my true son due to our common faith. May God the father and our saviour Yeshua the messiah give you grace and peace.

1Paulos, a_slave of_god, and an_ambassador of_Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) chosen_one/messiah, according_to the_faith of_the_chosen ones of_god, and knowledge of_the_truth, which is according_to devoutness, 2in the_hope of_life eternal, which the unlying god promised before times eternal, 3but revealed the message of_him in_ ^his_own _seasons in the_proclamation, which I was_entrusted according_to the_command of_god, the saviour of_us 4to_Titos, ^my_genuine child, according_to ^our_common faith:
grace and peace from god the_father and chosen_one/messiah Yaʸsous, the saviour of_us.

1:5 Qualifications for leaders

5The reason that I asked you to stay behind in Crete was so that you would find what needed to be reorganised and so that you would appoint elders in every city just as I had directed you. 6[ref]Each elder must have a clean record, be the husband of one wife, and have believing children who are not wild or disobedient. 7Any overseer in the assembly as a manager working for God must have a clean record, not be self-centred, not be quick to get angry, not addicted to wine, not a bully, and not greedy, 8but rather hospitable, someone who loves what is good, sensible, honest, loves God, and self-controlled. 9He must hold faithfully to the message that was taught, so that he will be effective in encouraging others with sound teaching and to be rebuking those who speak against the message.

5For/Because_reason_of this, I_left_ you _behind in Kraʸtaʸ, in_order_that you_may_set_in_order the things lacking, and may_appoint elders in /every/_city as I directed to_you, 6if anyone is unindictable, the_husband of_one wife, having believing children, not in accusation of_intemperance or insubordinate.
7For/Because it_is_fitting the overseer to_be unindictable as a_manager of_god, not self-willed, not easily_angered, not winebibbing, not a_bully, not greedy, 8but hospitable, a_lover_of_good, sensible, righteous, devout, self-controlled, 9upholding of_the faithful message according_to the teaching, in_order_that he_may_be powerful both to_be_exhorting with the teaching which being_sound, and to_be_rebuking the ones speaking_against it.

1:10 Handling those who go off the track

10There’s plenty of people who don’t want to be told what to do, empty talkers and outright deceivers, especially those that push the letter of the law. 11These people need to be silenced because they mess up whole families when they teach them things that they shouldn’t—all for the sake of shameful game. 12One of their own prophets said that the people from Crete are liars, evil beasts, and lazy gluttons, 13and that’s right. For those reasons, you need to sternly tell them they’re wrong, so that they can become sound in their faith, 14and not pay attention to Jewish myths or human rules which turn people away from the truth. 15For someone who’s pure in their thinking, everything is pure to them, but for unbelievers and those who’ve strayed from the truth, nothing is pure because their minds and consciences have already been damaged— 16they say that they know God, but their actions show that they don’t, and so they’re detestable. They can no longer accept teaching so they’re unsuitable for any good work.

10For/Because many are insubordinate, useless_talkers, and deceivers, most_of_all the ones of the circumcision, 11whom it_is_fitting to_be_silencing, who are_overturning whole households, teaching the things it_is_ not _fitting, for_reason_of shameful gain.
12Someone said of them, an_own prophet of_them:
ones_from_Kraʸtaʸ always are liars, evil wild_beasts, idle bellies.
13This The testimony is true.
For/Because which cause be_rebuking them severely, in_order_that they_may_be_being_sound in the faith,
14not giving_heed to_Youdaiōns myths and the_commands of_humans turning_away the truth.
15All things_are pure to_the pure, but to_the ones having_been_defiled and unbelievers, nothing is pure, but both the mind, and the conscience of_them has_been_defiled.
16They_are_confessing to_have_known god, but by_their works they_are_disowning him, being detestable and unpersuadable, and unqualified for any good work.

2:1 Proper behaviour for believers

2But you, Titos speak only what comes from sound teaching. 2Older men need to be sober, dignified, sensible, and sound in their faith, their love, and their endurance. 3Likewise older women need to honour God by their behaviour, not making false accusations, not addicted to a lot of wine. They should teaching what is good 4so that they can train the younger women to love their husbands and children, 5and to be sensible and pure, homemakers that do good for others, living under the authority of their husbands so that others don’t speak evil of God’s message because of them.

6Also encourage younger men to be sensible. 7Be a good example in everything you do and in your teaching. Don’t be led astray, maintain your dignity, 8watch every word that comes out of your lips, stay above reproach—all this so that those who oppose us can be reached because there’s nothing bad they can say about us.

9Slaves need to conform to their master’s commands, aiming to please. They shouldn’t speak against their masters 10or be pilfering from them, rather they should display their good faith so that their actions add to the teachings of God our saviour.

11This is because God’s grace which offers salvation to all people has appeared 12and teaches us that when we distance ourselves from ungodliness and worldly lusts, we can live sensibly and justly and devoutly in the present age. 13Then we can look forward to the blessing of the majestic appearance of our great God and saviour, Yeshua the messiah 14[ref]who gave himself for us in order to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify us into his chosen people, eager to do good things.

15Teach these things as you encourage some and scold others, but don’t let anyone disrespect you.

2But you be_speaking the things it_is_befitting which to_being_sound teaching.
2The_older_men to_be sober, dignified, sensible, being_sound the in_faith, the in_love, the in_endurance.
3The_older_women likewise reverent in behavior, not diabolical, not having_been_enslaved to_ much _wine, good_teaching, 4in_order_that they_are_making_ the new women _sensible to_be husband-loving, children-loving, 5sensible, pure, homemakers, good, being_subjected to_their own husbands, in_order_that the message of_ the _god may_ not _be_being_slandered.
6The younger men likewise be_exhorting to_be_being_sensible, 7about all things yourself bringing_about an_example of_good works, in your teaching, incorruption, dignity, 8healthy speech, irreproachable, in_order_that the man of contrary may_be_swayed, having nothing bad to_be_saying concerning us.
9Slaves to_be_being_subjected to_^their_own masters in all things, to_be well_pleasing, not speaking_against, 10not embezzling, but displaying all good faith, in_order_that in all things they_may_be_adorning the teaching which of_the saviour of_us, god.
11For/Because the grace of_ the _god has_appeared, salvation to_all people, 12instructing us that having_disowned the ungodliness and the worldly lusts, we_may_live sensibly and justly and devoutly in the present age, 13waiting_for the blessed hope, and the_appearing of_the glory of_the great god and saviour of_us, Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa), chosen_one/messiah 14who gave himself for us, in_order_that he_may_redeem us from all lawlessness, and may_purify to_himself a_people chosen, zealous of_good works.
15Be_speaking these things, and be_exhorting, and be_rebuking, with all command.

3:1 Expected behaviour

3Remind people to conform to their rulers and authorities, being obedient and ready to do anything that’s good. 2Don’t slander others, be peaceable. Don’t be strong-willed, but rather show gentleness to all people. 3We were also foolish and stubborn at one time, straying from the good and giving in to various lusts and pleasures, being mean and envious, even full of hate and hating one another. 4But when God our saviour revealed his kindness and love for humankind, 5he saved us, not because of the ‘good deeds’ that we did, but out of his mercy. He regenerated us through washing and renewed us by his holy spirit 6which he lavishly poured on us through Yeshua the messiah 7so that we might become heirs with the expectation of living forever, having been declared that we have no outstanding legal charges thanks to his grace. 8That statement can be trusted. I want you to confirm those things so that those who have believed in God will be leading in wanting to do good things. These things are good and benefit everyone.

9But avoid foolish debates, arguments about ancestry, other strife, and quarrels about the commandments because they all achieve nothing and waste time. 10Refuse to listen to a divisive person after you’ve given them two warnings 11knowing that such people condemn themselves by their corruption and sinful attitude.

3Be_reminding them to_be_being_subjected to_rulers, to_authorities, to_be_yielding, to_be ready for every good work, 2no_one to_be_slandering, to_be peaceable, gentle, all displaying gentleness toward all people.
3For/Because once we also were foolish, unpersuadable, being_strayed, serving in_lusts and various gratifications, going_by in malice and envy, hateful, hating one_another.
4But when the kindness and the love_of_mankind of_ god _the saviour of_us has_appeared, 5not by works which in righteousness, that we practiced, but according_to the mercy, of_him he_saved us, through the_washing of_regeneration and renewal of_the_ holy _spirit, 6whom he_poured_out on us richly, through Yaʸsous chosen_one/messiah, the saviour of_us, 7in_order_that having_been_justified by_the grace of_that one, we_may_be_become heirs, according_to the_hope of_ eternal _life.
8Trustworthy is the saying, and I_am_wishing you to_be_confirming concerning these things:
In_order_that the ones having_believed in_god may_be_caring to_be_leading of_good works.
These things is good and beneficial to_ the _people.
9But be_avoiding foolish debates, and genealogies, and strifes, and legal quarrels, they_are for unprofitable and useless.
10Be_refusing a_sectarian person after one and a_second admonition, 11having_known that the such person has_been_perverted and is_sinning, being self-condemned.

3:12 Closing

12[ref]Whenever I send Artemas or Tychicus to you, you should try to meet me at Nicopolis, because I’ve decided to spend the winter there. 13[ref]Help by sending Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way so that they won’t be needing anything. 14Our people must also be learning to be leading in doing good things to meet the necessary needs so that they won’t be unproductive.

15Everyone here with me sends their greetings to you. And please greet the ones there for us who love us in the faith.
