OET (OET-LV)and_he/it_was on_next_day and_she/it_said the_firstborn to the_younger here I_lay last_night with father_my make_drink_him wine also the_night and_go_in lie with_him/it and_preserve through_father_our offspring.

OET (OET-RV) Then the next day, the older girl said to the younger, Listen, last night I lay with my father. Let’s get him drunk again tonight then you go lie with him so that we’ll give life to descendants through our father.”

uW Translation Notes:

וַֽיְהִי֙ מִֽמָּחֳרָ֔ת

and=he/it_was on,next_day

The phrase Then it happened introduces and emphasizes important information which the following narrative builds on. It also creates suspense so that readers and listeners wonder what will happen next. Some translations leave this phrase out, but doing that loses some of the suspense. Do what is best in your language. Alternate translation: “The next day, this is what happened:”

הַצְּעִירָ֔ה

the,younger

See how you translated this phrase in verse 31. Alternate translation: “his younger one,” or “her younger sister,” or “her sister,”

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / infostructure

הֵן & אֶ֖מֶשׁ

if & last_night

For some languages it may be more natural to put this time phrase (last night) last in this sentence. Do what is best in your language.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / euphemism

שָׁכַ֥בְתִּי & אֶת אָבִ֑י

lay_~_with &DOM father,my

See how you translated lay with in verse 33. Alternate translation: “I slept with our father.” or “I had physical relations with our father.”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / infostructure

נַשְׁקֶ֨נּוּ יַ֜יִן גַּם הַלַּ֗יְלָה

make_~_drink,him wine also/yet the=night

Consider whether it is better in your language to put the time word tonight first or last in this clause. Alternate translation: “Tonight we should get him drunk again.”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / euphemism

שִׁכְבִ֣י עִמּ֔וֹ

lie with=him/it

Alternate translation: “sleep with him”

וּנְחַיֶּ֥ה

and,preserve

See how you translated the last clause in verse 32, which is the same as the rest of verse 34. Alternate translation: “so that we can have descendants” or “so that we can preserve our family line”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / pronouns

מֵאָבִ֖ינוּ

through,father,our

Alternate translation: “by our father.” or “through him.”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

19:1-38 The Canaanites were an evil, corrupting people. God judged their morally bankrupt civilization and warned others against becoming like them. It was difficult to get Lot and his family out of Sodom; it was more difficult to get Sodom out of Lot and his family. This chapter helped later Israelites to understand the moral and spiritual threat of the peoples living in and around the Promised Land, such as the Canaanites and Lot’s descendants, the Moabites and the Ammonites (see Num 22–25; Deut 23:3-6; Josh 24:9; Judg 10:7-9; 11:4-5; 1 Sam 10:27; 1 Kgs 11:1-3; 2 Kgs 24:2).
