TSNTyndale Study Notes:

41:1-46 God had used two dreams to identify Joseph as a leader among his brothers (37:5-11). He used two dreams to test Joseph’s faith in prison (40:5-14). Now he would use two dreams to elevate Joseph from prison to preeminence. Joseph had repeatedly proven faithful in small matters; now he would be put in charge of great things.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

וְהָיָ֨ה הָאֹ֤כֶל לְפִקָּדוֹן֙

and=it_was the,food as,reserve

Alternate translation: “That extra food should be kept in storage” or “That grain should stay in storage” or “They must continue to store that surplus grain”

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

לָאָ֔רֶץ

for_the,land

The phrase the land refers here to the people who live in the land of Egypt. Make sure that is clear in your translation. Alternate translation: “for the people of the land to eat” or “so that the people of the land have it to eat”

לְשֶׁ֨בַע֙ שְׁנֵ֣י הָרָעָ֔ב אֲשֶׁ֥ר תִּהְיֶ֖יןָ

during,seven two_of the,famine which/who occur

Alternate translation: “during the seven years when food is very scarce”

בְּאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם

in=land Miʦrayim/(Egypt)

Consider whether or not it is natural in your language to repeat “the land/country” in this sentence. Alternate translation: “in Egypt,”

Note 2 topic: writing-pronouns

וְלֹֽא־תִכָּרֵ֥ת הָאָ֖רֶץ

and=not perish the=earth/land

Make sure the way you translated “the people of/in the land/country” at the beginning of this verse fits with how you translate it here. It is helpful to read your translation aloud to make sure it is clear and natural. Alternate translation: “so that the people in the land” or “so that the people”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

וְלֹֽא־תִכָּרֵ֥ת הָאָ֖רֶץ

and=not perish the=earth/land

See how you translated the idiom cut off in Gen 9:11. It may be necessary to translate it differently here because of the different context. Alternate translation: “will not be destroyed by”

בָּרָעָֽב

in/on/at/with,famine

Alternate translation: “the severe food scarcity”
