MSG (2-6)The servant grew up before God—a scrawny seedling,
a scrubby plant in a parched field.
There was nothing attractive about him,
nothing to cause us to take a second look.
He was looked down on and passed over,
a man who suffered, who knew pain firsthand.
One look at him and people turned away.
We looked down on him, thought he was scum.
But the fact is, it was our pains he carried—
our disfigurements, all the things wrong with us.
We thought he brought it on himself,
that God was punishing him for his own failures.
But it was our sins that did that to him,
that ripped and tore and crushed him—our sins!
He took the punishment, and that made us whole.
Through his bruises we get healed.
We’re all like sheep who’ve wandered off and gotten lost.
We’ve all done our own thing, gone our own way.
And God has piled all our sins, everything we’ve done wrong,
on him, on him.
NET He was wounded because of our rebellious deeds,
⇔ crushed because of our sins;
⇔ he endured punishment that made us well;
⇔ because of his wounds we have been healed.
LSV And He is pierced for our transgressions, bruised for our iniquities,
The discipline of our peace [is] on Him,
And by His scourging we are healed.
FBV But he was wounded because of our rebellious acts, he was crushed because of our guilt. He experienced the discipline that brings us peace,[fn] and his wounds heal us.
53:5 “Peace”: often in the sense of “well-being” rather than the absence of war. In addition, the word “discipline” in this verse is more to do with training a child than punishment, as the Septuagint translators recognized.
T4T But his body will be bruised because of the evil things that we did,
⇔ wounded because of our sins.
⇔ He will be beaten in order that things will go well for our souls;
⇔ and because he will be whipped, our souls can be healed.

53:5 he was pierced: See also Zech 12:10.
• crushed . . . beaten . . . whipped: These were typically punishments for crimes. Sin is a crime against God.
• be whole: Hebrew shalom, usually translated “peace.” Shalom means to experience wholeness in body, in mind, and in relationships with others. The servant would be injured so that humanity can be whole and healthy in all aspects of life (see also Isa 57:18). We do not need to suffer divine condemnation for our sins because the servant has already done so (see Gal 1:4).
