Introduction to Isaiah 8

Structure and Formatting

The central section of Part One of the book of Isaiah, which presents narratives about Isaiah personally, continues in this chapter. (The part of this section that begins at 8:19 continues through 9:7.) 1. Narratives about Isaiah 1. Isaiah and his children (1–18) 2. The child will bring light where there was darkness (19–22, continued in chapter 9)

Translation Issues in This Chapter

The last verse in this chapter, 8:22, speaks of “trouble” and “darkness.” In that way, it echoes the language of 5:30, the last verse before the central section of Part One of Isaiah that presents narratives about Isaiah. This language in 8:22 shows that this central section is approaching its conclusion. The oracles about Judah resume at 9:8. So that your readers can appreciate this, try to translate the terms in 8:22 the same way you translated them in 5:30.
