TSNTyndale Study Notes:

5:10-13 The Lord delivered a decree to destroy Judah’s vineyards, which probably represented Judah itself (see Isa 5:1-7; 27:2-6). The people were ignoring the Lord. They did not belong to him as his children, and he could not overlook the treachery of their love for idols (Jer 3:6; 4:27; 7:27).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

(Occurrence 0) The prophets will become wind

(Some words not found in UHB: and, the, prophets are to/for=wind/breath/spirit and, the, word not (is)_in=them thus done to/for=them )

Here “prophets” is a metonym that represents what the prophets say, and “wind” is a metaphor for something that does not do anything. Alternate translation: “The prophets words are just noisy wind” or “The prophets make noise like the wind, but what they prophesy will not happen” (See also: figs-metaphor)

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

(Occurrence 0) the word is not in them

(Some words not found in UHB: and, the, prophets are to/for=wind/breath/spirit and, the, word not (is)_in=them thus done to/for=them )

Here “the word” refers to God’s message. Alternate translation: “God’s message is not in them” or “the messages that they speak are not from God”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

(Occurrence 0) so let what they say be done to them

(Some words not found in UHB: and, the, prophets are to/for=wind/breath/spirit and, the, word not (is)_in=them thus done to/for=them )

It can be stated clearly what kinds of things the prophets were talking about. Alternate translation: “so let the harm that the prophets talk about come to them” or “since the prophets say that bad things will happen to us, let those bad things happen to the prophets”
