TSNTyndale Study Notes:

41:1-7 The Lord here invited the nations to a trial where he would prove that he alone is God. They were defenseless as he declared that a king from the east (41:2) would crush Babylon, opening the way for Israel to return.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

(Occurrence 0) He pursues them and passes by safely

(Some words not found in UHB: pursues, them passes_on safely path in/on/at/with,feet,his not touching )

Alternate translation: “The ruler from the east pursues the nations”

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) by a swift path that his feet scarcely touch

(Some words not found in UHB: pursues, them passes_on safely path in/on/at/with,feet,his not touching )

This could mean: (1) this is a metaphor in which he and his army moving very quickly is spoken of as if his feet barely touch the ground. Alternate translation: “by a path on which he moves with great speed” or (2) “feet” represents the whole person and the phrase indicates that this is a path that they have not traveled before. Alternate translation: “by a path that he has never traveled before” (See also: figs-synecdoche)
