Note: This view shows ‘verses’ which are not natural language units and hence sometimes only part of a sentence will be visible—click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for Bible-translators and others doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). The OET segments on this page are still early looks into the drafted texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible—please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
הֵ֤ן
if
Yahweh is using the term Behold to focus the listeners’ attention on what he is about to say. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation. Alternate translation: [Look]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / doublet
יֵבֹ֨שׁוּ֙ וְיִכָּ֣לְמ֔וּ
ashamed and,they_will_be_put_to_shame
The terms have shame and be humiliated mean similar things. Yahweh is using the two terms together for emphasis. If it would be clearer for your readers, you could express the emphasis with a single phrase. Alternate translation: [they will be completely put to shame]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
וְיִכָּ֣לְמ֔וּ
and,they_will_be_put_to_shame
The expression be humiliated is a passive verbal form. If it would be unnatural to use that form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [and God will humiliate them]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
הַנֶּחֱרִ֣ים בָּ֑ךְ
[those,who_are]_angry on/over=you(fs)
Here Yahweh is speaking of those who are angry at Israel as if their anger were a fire that had been kindled. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [the ones who are angry with you]
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
כֹּ֖ל הַנֶּחֱרִ֣ים בָּ֑ךְ
all [those,who_are]_angry on/over=you(fs)
The expression having been kindled is a passive verbal form. If it would be unnatural to use that form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [all of the ones who burned with anger against you]
Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / simile
יִֽהְי֥וּ כְאַ֛יִן
be as,nothing
The point of this comparison is that just as nought is nothing at all, so Israel’s enemies will amount to nothing and perish. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make this point explicitly. Alternate translation: [Just as nothing is nothing at all, so they too will be nothing]
Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns
אַנְשֵׁ֥י רִיבֶֽךָ
men_of your_strife_of,your
If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of contention, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: [the men who contend with you]
Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / possession
אַנְשֵׁ֥י רִיבֶֽךָ
men_of your_strife_of,your
Yahweh is using the possessive form to describe the men who are characterized by their contention with you, that is, those who quarrel with you. If a speaker of your language would not use the possessive form for this, you could express this idea in another way. Alternate translation: [the men who contend with you]
