Structure and Formatting

This chapter presents three oracles that continue to develop the themes of this part of the book.In the first oracle (verses 1–8), Yahweh encourages the Israelites who trust him to wait patiently and confidently for him to deliver them. This continues the themes of the last oracle in chapter 50.The other two oracles in this chapter (verses 9–16 and 17–23) are part of a series of three oracles that each begin with a double call for someone to “awake.” (The third oracle is in 52:1–12). First the prophet calls upon the “arm of Yahweh” to “awake.” He asks Yahweh to use his power to rescue the Israelites from exile, just as the rescued them from slavery in Egypt. Yahweh reassures him that he will use him to help rescue the people. The prophet then calls to Jerusalem, “Awaken yourself!” He promises that the people of the city will recover from defeat and that Yahweh will defeat their enemies. 1. Yahweh will rescue the people who trust in him (1–8) 2. The prophet can be assured that Yahweh will use his power to help the Israelites (9–16) 3. The people of Jerusalem will recover from their defeat (17–23)
