TSNTyndale Study Notes:

51:4 my law . . . my justice: The work of the servant will prosper because justice will be the rule in God’s kingdom on earth (see 42:1-4).
• a light to the nations: The nations will receive the Lord and his revelation (see also 42:6; 49:6; 60:1-3; 66:19-23; Matt 4:15-16; Luke 2:32; John 1:4-9; 12:35-50; Acts 13:47).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

General Information:

Yahweh speaks to the people of Israel.

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

(Occurrence 0) Be attentive to me … listen to me

(Some words not found in UHB: listen to=me people,my and,nation,my to=me listen that/for/because/then/when law from,with,me go_out and,justice,my for,light peoples set )

These two phrases mean the same thing. Together they strengthen the command to listen.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) I will make my justice to be a light for the nations

(Some words not found in UHB: listen to=me people,my and,nation,my to=me listen that/for/because/then/when law from,with,me go_out and,justice,my for,light peoples set )

Here God’s justice represents his law, and a light represents knowledge of what is right. This means the people of the nations will understand and obey God’s law. Alternate translation: “my law will teach the nations what is right” or “the nations will know my law”
