UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) do not walk after other gods

(Some words not found in UHB: and,not go after ʼElohīm other to,serve,them and,to,worship to/for=them and=not provoke_~_toanger DOM,me in/on/at/with,work hands,your_all's and=not do_~_harm to,you_all )

Jeremiah speaks of a person being devoted to a god as if the person were walking behind the god. Alternate translation: “do not become devoted to other gods”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

(Occurrence 0) do not provoke him with the work of your hands

(Some words not found in UHB: and,not go after ʼElohīm other to,serve,them and,to,worship to/for=them and=not provoke_~_toanger DOM,me in/on/at/with,work hands,your_all's and=not do_~_harm to,you_all )

The word “him” refers to Yahweh. Here, the phrase the work of your hands could mean: (1) it is a reference to the idols that the people have made with their hands. Alternate translation: “do not provoke Yahweh with the idols that you have made” or (2) It is an idiom that refers to the actions of a person, with the word “hands” being a synecdoche that represents the person who does those actions. Alternate translation: “do not provoke Yahweh by the things that you do” (See also: figs-synecdoche and figs-idiom)
