UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

(Occurrence 0) Though darkness will cover the earth, and thick darkness the nations

(Some words not found in UHB: that/for/because/then/when see/lo/see! the=darkness cover earth/land and,thick_darkness peoples and,upon,you rise YHWH and,glory,his over,you appear )

Both of these phrases mean the same thing and are combined for emphasis. They refer to “spiritual darkness.” This means all the other people of the world will not know Yahweh or how to please him. This is a metaphor for divine judgment. (See also: figs-metaphor)

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) yet Yahweh will arise upon you

(Some words not found in UHB: that/for/because/then/when see/lo/see! the=darkness cover earth/land and,thick_darkness peoples and,upon,you rise YHWH and,glory,his over,you appear )

This means the light of God’s presence will appear for the people of Israel, and it will show the way they should go.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

(Occurrence 0) his glory will be seen on you

(Some words not found in UHB: that/for/because/then/when see/lo/see! the=darkness cover earth/land and,thick_darkness peoples and,upon,you rise YHWH and,glory,his over,you appear )

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “the people of the nations will see his glory on you”
