Note: This view shows ‘verses’ which are not natural language units and hence sometimes only part of a sentence will be visible—click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for Bible-translators and others doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). The OET segments on this page are still early looks into the drafted texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible—please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

הִבּ֧וֹק תִּבּ֛וֹק הָאָ֖רֶץ וְהִבּ֣וֹז תִּבּ֑וֹז

to_be_laid_waste she_will_be_laid_waste the=earth/land and,totally_(be_plundered) she_will_be_plundered

These two clauses mean basically the same thing. The second emphasizes the meaning of the first by repeating the same idea with different words. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could combine them and express the emphasis in another way. Alternate translation: [The earth will certainly be emptied, and it will certainly be plundered]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / reduplication

הִבּ֧וֹק תִּבּ֛וֹק הָאָ֖רֶץ

to_be_laid_waste she_will_be_laid_waste the=earth/land

Isaiah is repeating forms of the verb emptied in order to intensify his expression of the idea that it conveys. If your language can repeat words for intensification, it would be appropriate to do that here in your translation. If not, your language may have another way of expressing the intensification. Alternate translation: [The earth will certainly be emptied]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

תִּבּ֛וֹק הָאָ֖רֶץ

she_will_be_laid_waste the=earth/land

The expression the earth will be emptied is a passive verbal form. If it would be unnatural to use that form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. If you need to say who does the action, the context indicates that it is Yahweh. Alternate translation: [Yahweh will empty the earth]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / reduplication

וְהִבּ֣וֹז תִּבּ֑וֹז

and,totally_(be_plundered) she_will_be_plundered

Isaiah is repeating forms of the verb plundered in order to intensify his expression of the idea that it conveys. If your language can repeat words for intensification, it would be appropriate to do that here in your translation. If not, your language may have another way of expressing the intensification. Alternate translation: [and it will truly be plundered]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

תִּבּ֑וֹז

she_will_be_plundered

The expression it will be plundered is a passive verbal form. If it would be unnatural to use that form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. If you need to say who does the action, the context indicates that it is Yahweh. Alternate translation: [Yahweh will plunder it]
