Structure and Formatting

Isaiah 29 presents the second and third of the six woe oracles in Part Four of the book. These oracles rebuke the leaders and people of Judah for depending on Egypt instead of trusting in Yahweh for protection against Assyria. The two oracles here have these sections: 1. Yahweh will humble Jerusalem by having an enemy army besiege it (1–14) 1. The people of Jerusalem will be humbled even though they follow religious forms (1–4) 2. Yahweh will ultimately defeat the besieging army (5–8) 3. Jerusalem’s prophets are currently unable to understand what Yahweh is doing (9–14) 2. A woe against those who try to hide their plans from Yahweh (15–24) 1. Those who hide their plans are acting as if they are greater than Yahweh (15–16) 2. Yahweh will act to empower weak people and humble powerful people (17–21) 3. Yahweh will restore the Israelites and they will worship him again (22–24)
