Introduction to Isaiah 33

Structure and Formatting

Isaiah 33 presents the last of the six woe oracles in Part Four of the book. These oracles rebuke the leaders and people of Judah for depending on Egypt instead of trusting in Yahweh for protection against Assyria. This last oracle has these sections: 1. Yahweh will destroy Judah’s enemies and restore the people (1–6) 2. The current desperate situation in Judah (7–9) 3. Yahweh will come and destroy his enemies (10–13) 4. Righteous people will be safe (14–16) 5. A vision of the restored kingdom (17–24)
