Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for Bible-translators and others doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). The OET segments on this page are still early looks into the drafted texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible—please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

נִשְׂגָּ֣ב יְהוָ֔ה

exalted YHWH

The expression Yahweh is exalted is a passive verbal form. If it would be unnatural to use that form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [Yahweh exalts himself]

Note 2 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

נִשְׂגָּ֣ב יְהוָ֔ה כִּ֥י

exalted YHWH that/for/because/then/when

The word translated as for indicates that what follows is a reason for what came before. Use a connector in your language that makes it clear that what follows is a reason for what came before. Alternate translation: [Yahweh is exalted because]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

שֹׁכֵ֖ן מָר֑וֹם

dwells on_high

Isaiah is speaking as if Yahweh’s supreme authority were his physically living in a high place. The ULT says he inhabits the height. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [he rules from his high position above all]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / doublet

מִשְׁפָּ֖ט וּצְדָקָֽה

justice and,righteousness

The terms justice and righteousness mean similar things. Isaiah is using the two terms together for emphasis. If it would be clearer for your readers, you could express the emphasis with a single phrase. Alternate translation: [with complete fairness]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

מִשְׁפָּ֖ט וּצְדָקָֽה

justice and,righteousness

If your language does not use abstract nouns for the ideas of justice and righteousness, you could express the same ideas in other ways. Alternate translation: [with what is just and right]
