• punished her twice over for all her sins: Israel experienced the full brunt of God’s wrath (51:19-23; cp. 61:7).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / personification

(Occurrence 0) Speak tenderly to Jerusalem

(Some words not found in UHB: speak on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in heart Yerushalayim and,cry to=her/it that/for/because/then/when she/it_is_full warfare,her that/for/because/then/when paid_for iniquity,her that/for/because/then/when received from,hand YHWH double in=all sins,her )

The prophet speaks of Jerusalem as if it were a woman whom Yahweh has forgiven. As such, Jerusalem represents the people who live in that city. Alternate translation: “Speak tenderly to the people of Jerusalem” (See also: figs-metonymy)

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / 123person

(Occurrence 0) proclaim to her … her warfare … her iniquity … she has received … her sins

These pronouns refer to Jerusalem but may be changed if “the people of Jerusalem” is adopted as a translation. Alternate translation: “proclaim to them … their warfare … their iniquity … they have received … their sins”

(Occurrence 0) her warfare

(Some words not found in UHB: speak on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in heart Yerushalayim and,cry to=her/it that/for/because/then/when she/it_is_full warfare,her that/for/because/then/when paid_for iniquity,her that/for/because/then/when received from,hand YHWH double in=all sins,her )

Possible meanings are that the word warfare refers: (1) to military battle or (2) to forced labor.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

(Occurrence 0) her iniquity is pardoned

(Some words not found in UHB: speak on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in heart Yerushalayim and,cry to=her/it that/for/because/then/when she/it_is_full warfare,her that/for/because/then/when paid_for iniquity,her that/for/because/then/when received from,hand YHWH double in=all sins,her )

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “Yahweh has pardoned her iniquity”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

(Occurrence 0) from Yahweh’s hand

(Some words not found in UHB: speak on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in heart Yerushalayim and,cry to=her/it that/for/because/then/when she/it_is_full warfare,her that/for/because/then/when paid_for iniquity,her that/for/because/then/when received from,hand YHWH double in=all sins,her )

Here the word “hand” represents Yahweh himself. Alternate translation: “from Yahweh”
