TSNTyndale Study Notes:

40:22 God sits enthroned as King over all the earth (see 6:1; Pss 2:4; 80:1; 99:1; 102:12; 113:5). God is so immense and awesome that humans are like grasshoppers in comparison.
• Belief in God as creator of the heavens and earth contradicts the popular Babylonian and Egyptian belief that the sun, moon, and stars represent gods.
• like a curtain . . . his tent: See also Ps 104:2.

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) He is the one who sits above the horizon of the earth

(Some words not found in UHB: the,sits on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in circle the=earth/land and,inhabitants,its like,grasshoppers the,stretches_out like_the,curtain heavens and,spreads_~_out,them like_a,tent to,live )

The prophet speaks of Yahweh ruling the earth as if Yahweh were seated on a throne above the earth.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / simile

(Occurrence 0) the inhabitants are like grasshoppers before him

(Some words not found in UHB: the,sits on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in circle the=earth/land and,inhabitants,its like,grasshoppers the,stretches_out like_the,curtain heavens and,spreads_~_out,them like_a,tent to,live )

The prophet compares the way Yahweh considers humans to the way humans would consider grasshoppers. Just as grasshoppers are small to humans, humans are small and weak before God.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

(Occurrence 0) He stretches out the heavens like a curtain and spreads them out as a tent to live in

(Some words not found in UHB: the,sits on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in circle the=earth/land and,inhabitants,its like,grasshoppers the,stretches_out like_the,curtain heavens and,spreads_~_out,them like_a,tent to,live )

These two lines share similar meanings. The prophet speaks of Yahweh creating the heavens as if he had erected a tent in which to live. Alternate translation: “He spreads out the heavens as easily as a person would stretch out a curtain or erect a tent in which to live” (See also: figs-simile)
