Note: This view shows ‘verses’ which are not natural language units and hence sometimes only part of a sentence will be visible—click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for Bible-translators and others doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). The OET segments on this page are still early looks into the drafted texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible—please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
וְהָיָ֤ה אֽוֹר־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ לְאֵ֔שׁ
and=it_was light Yisrael (into)_a,fire
Isaiah is speaking as if Yahweh, the light of Israel, would literally become a fire that would burn and consume the Assyrians. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [Yahweh, who gives light to Israel, will be as destructive as a fire]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis
וּקְדוֹשׁ֖וֹ לְלֶהָבָ֑ה
and,its_holy_of,[one] (into)_a,flame
Isaiah is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You can supply these words from the context if that would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: [and his Holy One will become a flame]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
וּקְדוֹשׁ֖וֹ לְלֶהָבָ֑ה
and,its_holy_of,[one] (into)_a,flame
Here Isaiah is speaking as if Yahweh, his Holy One, were a flame that would burn and consume. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [and his Holy One will act like a burning flame]
Note 4 topic: writing-pronouns
וּבָעֲרָ֗ה וְאָֽכְלָ֛ה שִׁית֥וֹ וּשְׁמִיר֖וֹ
and,it_will_burn and,it_will_consume bush[es]_of,his and,thorn[s]_of,his
In connection to the thorn and the briar, the pronoun his refers to Assyria. It may be helpful to clarify this for your readers. Alternate translation: [and it will burn and consume Assyria’s thorn and Assyria’s briar]
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
שִׁית֥וֹ וּשְׁמִיר֖וֹ
bush[es]_of,his and,thorn[s]_of,his
Isaiah is speaking as if the Assyrians were worthless weeds, his thorn and his briar, that Yahweh would burn up. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [his enemies]
Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / doublet
שִׁית֥וֹ וּשְׁמִיר֖וֹ
bush[es]_of,his and,thorn[s]_of,his
These two phrases his thorn and his briar mean basically the same thing. The second emphasizes the meaning of the first by repeating the same idea with different words. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could combine them and express the emphasis in another way. Alternate translation: [his thorny briars]
