TSNTyndale Study Notes:

23:9-32 These short poems and interjections appear to be excerpts from a session in which the Lord prepared Jeremiah to prosecute the false prophets of Jerusalem. Because these leaders had misused the Lord’s name, they incurred his wrath (Exod 20:7).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

(Occurrence 0) How long will this go on, prophets who prophesy lies from their minds, and who prophesy from the deceit in their hearts?

(Some words not found in UHB: until when(q) ?,continue in/on/at/with,hearts the,prophets prophesy the,lies and,prophets deceit heart,their_own )

Yahweh asks this question to emphasize that this is something that should not continue. Alternate translation: “This should not continue, prophets declaring lies which they themselves have made up.”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / doublet

(Occurrence 0) prophesy lies from their minds … prophesy from the deceit in their hearts

(Some words not found in UHB: until when(q) ?,continue in/on/at/with,hearts the,prophets prophesy the,lies and,prophets deceit heart,their_own )

These two phrases mean the same thing and emphasize that the false prophets made up their prophesies. Alternate translation: “prophesy things that come only from their own minds”
