43.10 Non est formatus. Quidam codices habent plasmatus; sed non convenit bene, sic tamen potest exponi: Ante me non est formatum idolum, quia feci hominem justum a quo injuste formatum est idolum.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

43:10 you are my witnesses: By their very presence in exile, Israel was evidence that God is truly God. He predicted the Exile long beforehand, and now it had come to pass. God alone is the true God because he speaks and acts and controls all of history. Idols and false gods could do none of these things. Israel would later become even greater evidence because God had also predicted their redemption (43:11-12).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / you

(Occurrence 0) You … my servant

(Some words not found in UHB: you_all witnesses,my declares YHWH and,servant,my which/who chosen so_that know and,believe to=me and,understand that/for/because/then/when I he/it to/for=my=face/front not formed god and,after,me not there_be )

Here “you” is plural and refers to the people of Israel. The phrase “my servant” refers to the nation, as a whole.

(Occurrence 0) Before me … after me

(Some words not found in UHB: you_all witnesses,my declares YHWH and,servant,my which/who chosen so_that know and,believe to=me and,understand that/for/because/then/when I he/it to/for=my=face/front not formed god and,after,me not there_be )

In speaking this way, Yahweh is not saying that there was a time before which he did not exist or a time after which he will not exist. He is asserting that he is eternal and that the gods whom the people of other nations worship are not.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

(Occurrence 0) Before me there was no god formed

(Some words not found in UHB: you_all witnesses,my declares YHWH and,servant,my which/who chosen so_that know and,believe to=me and,understand that/for/because/then/when I he/it to/for=my=face/front not formed god and,after,me not there_be )

Here the word “formed” indicates that Yahweh is speaking of idols that people have made. If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “None of the gods whom people have formed existed before me” (See also: figs-activepassive)

(Occurrence 0) there will be none after me

(Some words not found in UHB: you_all witnesses,my declares YHWH and,servant,my which/who chosen so_that know and,believe to=me and,understand that/for/because/then/when I he/it to/for=my=face/front not formed god and,after,me not there_be )

Alternate translation: “none of those gods will exist after me”
