Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for Bible-translators and others doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). The OET segments on this page are still early looks into the drafted texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible—please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

וּמִ֣י יָפֵ֑ר

and,who? frustrate

Isaiah is using the question form to emphasize that no one can oppose what Yahweh has determined. If a speaker of your language would not use the question form for that purpose, you could translate this as a statement or as an exclamation. Alternate translation: [and no one will thwart him!]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

וְיָד֥וֹ הַנְּטוּיָ֖ה

and_[is],hand_of,his the_[one,which_is]_stretched_out

Here, his hand represents Yahweh’s power. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: [And his power is at work]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

וְיָד֥וֹ הַנְּטוּיָ֖ה

and_[is],hand_of,his the_[one,which_is]_stretched_out

The expression stretched out is a passive verbal form. If it would be unnatural to use that form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. If you need to say who does the action, the context indicates that it is Yahweh himself. Alternate translation: [And his hand he has stretched out]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

וּֽמִ֥י יְשִׁיבֶֽנָּה

and,who? will,he_turn_it_back

Isaiah is using the question form to emphasize that no one can resist Yahweh’s power once he has acted. If a speaker of your language would not use the question form for that purpose, you could translate this as a statement or as an exclamation. Alternate translation: [and no one can turn it back!]
