BrTrBecause ye have said, We have made a covenant with Hades, and agreements with death; if the rushing storm should pass, it shall not come upon us: we have made falsehood our hope, and by falsehood shall we be protected:

ULTFor you have said, “We have cut a covenant with death,
 ⇔ and with Sheol we have made an agreement.
 ⇔ The cascading whip, when it passes through,
 ⇔ it will not come to us.
 ⇔ For we have made falsehood our refuge,
 ⇔ and in lies we shelter.”

USTYou boast and say,
 ⇔ “We made a promise with death to ensure that the power of death, when it passes over us, it cannot get to us.
 ⇔ We tried to turn our lying words into a shelter in which we could hide.

BSBFor you said, “We have made a covenant with death;
 ⇔ we have fashioned an agreement with Sheol.
 ⇔ When the overwhelming scourge passes through
 ⇔ it will not touch us,
 ⇔ because we have made lies our refuge
 ⇔ and falsehood [fn] our hiding place.”

28:15 Or false gods

OEBBecause you have said, ‘We are leagued with death,
 ⇔ and with Sheol we are compact;
 ⇔ so the flood, though it passes in whelming torrents,
 ⇔ will never reach unto us;
 ⇔ for a lie we have made our refuge,
 ⇔ we have sheltered ourselves behind falsehood.’

WEBBE“Because you have said, ‘We have made a covenant with death, and we are in agreement with Sheol.[fn] When the overflowing scourge passes through, it won’t come to us; for we have made lies our refuge, and we have hidden ourselves under falsehood.’ ”

28:15 Sheol is the place of the dead.

WMBB (Same as above including footnotes)

NETFor you say,
 ⇔ “We have made a treaty with death,
 ⇔ with Sheol we have made an agreement.
 ⇔ When the overwhelming judgment sweeps by
 ⇔ it will not reach us.
 ⇔ For we have made a lie our refuge,
 ⇔ we have hidden ourselves in a deceitful word.”

LSVBecause you have said: “We have made a covenant with death,
And we have made a provision with Sheol,
An overflowing scourge, when it passes over,
Does not meet us,
Though we have made a lie our refuge,
And have been hidden in falsehood.”

FBVYou claim, “We've made an agreement with death; we've got a contract with the grave. When the terrible disaster rushes by, it won't affect us, because our lies protect us and we hide in our own deceptions.”

T4TYou boast saying,
 ⇔ “We have made an alliance with the leaders of Egypt,
 ⇔ so we will not be killed in battles;
 ⇔ we will never go to the place where the dead people are.
 ⇔ When the army of Assyria attacks us, they will never defeat us,
 ⇔ because we have made an agreement with Egypt to protect us!”
 ⇔ But that agreement consists of a lot of lies [DOU].

LEB• Because you have said,“We have[fn] a covenant with death, •  and we have made an agreement with Sheol.
¶ The overwhelming flood, when it passes through, will not come to us, • for we have made lies[fn] our refuge, • and we have hidden ourselves in falsehood.”

28:15 Literally “cut”

28:15 Hebrew “lie”

BBEBecause you have said, We have made death our friend, and with the underworld we have made an agreement; when the overflowing waters come through they will not come near us; for we are looking to false words for help, taking cover in what is untrue:

KJB-1611Because ye haue said, Wee haue made a couenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement, when the ouerflowing scourge shall passe thorow, it shall not come vnto vs: for wee haue made lies our refuge, and vnder falsehood haue we hid our selues:

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

28:15 cheat death (literally have made a covenant with death) . . . dodge the grave: There are two interpretive possibilities: (1) The people had sold themselves to the Canaanite god of death, Mot, in return for his supposed protection. (2) The prophet was being sarcastic; the people thought their various political and economic moves guaranteed their personal security, but they had actually destroyed themselves.
• lies and deception: The leaders did not think of themselves as deceptive, but they were.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

(Occurrence 0) We have made a covenant with death, and with Sheol we have reached an agreement

(Some words not found in UHB: that/for/because/then/when said made covenant DOM death and,with sheol made agreement scourge overwhelming that/for/because/then/when passes_through not come,us that/for/because/then/when made lies refuge,our and,in/on/at/with,falsehood hidden )

Both of these statements mean basically the same thing. This could mean: (1) the leaders of Jerusalem have used magic or sorcery to try to make an agreement with the gods of the place of the dead so that these gods would protect them from dying or (2) this is a metaphor that speaks of the leaders having made an agreement with the leaders of Egypt. The leaders of Jerusalem were so confident that the Egyptians would protect that it was like they had made an agreement with the gods of the place of the dead. (See also: figs-metaphor)

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) So when the overwhelming whip passes through, it will not reach us

(Some words not found in UHB: that/for/because/then/when said made covenant DOM death and,with sheol made agreement scourge overwhelming that/for/because/then/when passes_through not come,us that/for/because/then/when made lies refuge,our and,in/on/at/with,falsehood hidden )

This speaks of Yahweh’s judgment and punishment as if it were a whip that would strike the people. And the whip is spoken of as if it were a flood that would pass through Jerusalem. Alternate translation: “As a result, when everyone else is suffering and dying, nothing will harm us”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

(Occurrence 0) For we have made a lie our refuge, and taken shelter in falsehood

(Some words not found in UHB: that/for/because/then/when said made covenant DOM death and,with sheol made agreement scourge overwhelming that/for/because/then/when passes_through not come,us that/for/because/then/when made lies refuge,our and,in/on/at/with,falsehood hidden )

These two phrases mean basically the same thing. A “lie” and “falsehood” are spoken of as if they were places where a person could go to hide. The leaders in Jerusalem would not have said they trust in a lie. They believed they were truly safe. But Isaiah knows they are not safe, because they trust in lies. Alternate translation: “For lies and falsehoods have become like a place where we can hide from danger” (See also: figs-metaphor)

(Occurrence 0) a lie our refuge … taken shelter in falsehood

(Some words not found in UHB: that/for/because/then/when said made covenant DOM death and,with sheol made agreement scourge overwhelming that/for/because/then/when passes_through not come,us that/for/because/then/when made lies refuge,our and,in/on/at/with,falsehood hidden )

This could mean: (1) the leaders trust in their own lies that they have said in order to protect themselves or (2) the leaders trust that the covenant they have made with the false gods of the place of the dead will keep them safe or (3) the leaders trust that the agreement they have made with the Egyptians will keep them safe.
