Psalm 40 Introduction

Structure and Formatting

Psalm 40 is considered to be one of the “psalms of praise.” At the same time, it is a “messianic psalm” that looks forward to the triumph of Jesus Christ. The writer of Hebrews (Hebrews 10:5–7) applies this passage (Psalm 40:6–8) to Jesus using the ancient Greek version. See the discussion of the types of psalms in the introduction to the book of Psalms.
