Psalm 29 Introduction

Structure and Formatting

Psalm 29 is a “psalm of praise.” It tells how Yahweh rules all nature. 1. A call to worship (1–2) 2. Declarations of God’s voice over creation depict natural phenomena (3–9) 3. The Lord sovereignty (10–11)

Religious and Cultural Concepts in This Psalm

The Cultural and Religious Background of verses 3–10

The cultural and religious background of verses 3–10 is the worship of the false gods of the nations who lived around the Israelites. Verses 3–10 are a firm declaration of Yahweh’s power and rule over the entire universe and an implicit denunciation of putting trust in false gods such as the Canaanite god Baal.Because David does not state the historical and religious background information explicitly in verses 3–10, it is recommended that you not include this information either but if you are using footnotes or chapter introductions in your translation, you may wish to include some of the background information there if it would help your readers.

Yahweh’s power

God is powerful. All he has to do is to speak in order to control nature. For an overview of Psalm 29 and help understanding some of the important exegetical and poetical issues in this psalm, see the Psalms: Layer by Layer videos below.
