Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for Bible-translators and others doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). The OET segments on this page are still early looks into the drafted texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible—please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

Psalm 28 Introduction

Structure and Formatting

Psalm 28 begins as a lament psalm and then transitions into praise, thanksgiving, and affirmation of his trust in Yahweh. 1. David prays for deliverance (1–2) 2. David asks God to judge the wicked (3–5) 3. David praises God and affirms his goodness (6–9)

Religious and Cultural Concepts in This Psalm

Trust

David trusted God completely and God rescued him. This is similar to Psalm 7 and 17 because it is an individual psalm of lament. (See: lament)

Translation Issues in This Psalm

Text variant in 28:8

In 28:8 some Hebrew manuscripts contain the Hebrew word that could be literally translated as “for them” while other Hebrew manuscripts contain the word that could be literally translated as “for his people.” The Hebrew manuscript that the ULT follows contains the word that reads “for them” but the ULT translates this word as “for his people” because this word is being considered an alternate spelling of the word “for his people.” For the reasoning behind this decision, see the portion on “The Text of v. 8a” in this video produced by the “Psalms: Layer by Layer” project titled “Psalm 28: Exegetical Issues.” See the video at ([https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHlm_UCsX-A&t=1037s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHlm_UCsX-A&t=1037s))“The Psalms: Layer by Layer” videos are part of the “Psalms: Layer by Layer” project, which is run by Scriptura (formerly Cambridge Digital Bible Research). To visit the Psalms: Layer by Layer website go to https://psalms.scriptura.org.
