1:18 The messiah’s birth
(Luke 1:26-38; 2:1-7)
18 Now this is how the birth of Yeshua (Jesus; Grk. Yesus) came about: Maria (Mary; Heb. Miryam; Grk. Maria/Mariam) his mother was engaged to Yosef (Joseph).[ref] But before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the work of the holy spirit. 19 But her husband to be, Yosef, was a godly man, and not wishing to disgrace Maria, he decided to quietly divorce her. 20 But as he was pondering that, one of Yahweh’s messengers appeared to him in a dream and told him, “Yosef, descendant of King David, don’t be afraid to marry Maria, because the baby in her has been conceived by the holy spirit. 21 In due course she’ll have a son and you’ll name him Yeshua,[ref] because he’ll save his people from their sins.”
22 Now all that happened in fulfilment of what Yahweh had said through the prophet, 23 “Listen, the virgin will get pregnant and she’ll have a son, and they’ll call him Imanu-El (Grk. Emmanuel) (in Hebrew) which means ‘God with us.’ ”[ref]
24 Then Yosef got up and did what Yahweh’s messenger had commanded him, and he went ahead and married Maria, 25 but he didn’t sleep with her until after she had given birth. Yosef named the boy Yeshua.[ref]
26 When Elisheva (Elizabeth; Grk. Elisabet) was six months pregnant, God sent his messenger Gavriel (Gabriel) to Nazaret (Nazareth), a city in the Galil region. 27 Gavriel went to a young woman named Maria (Mary; Heb. Miryam; Grk. Maria/Mariam) who was engaged to be married to Yosef (Joseph), a descendant of King David,[ref] 28 and entering the room, spoke to her, “Hello there. Yahweh is with you and he’s chosen you to be honoured.” 29 Maria was very puzzled by the statement and wondered what kind of greeting it could be 30 as the messenger continued, “Don’t be scared, Maria, because God is showing his favour on you, 31 and listen, you’ll conceive a baby and go on to give birth to a son, and you must name him Yeshua (Jesus; Grk. Yesus).[ref] 32 He’ll be very special and will be called ‘the son of the highest one’, and Yahweh God will give him the throne of David, his ancestor.[ref] 33 He’ll reign over Ya’akov’s (Jacob) descendants throughout the ages, and his kingdom will never end.”
34 “How would this work,” Maria asked the messenger, “because I’ve never slept with a guy?”
35 “The holy spirit will come over you,” answered the messenger, “and the power of the highest one will overshadow you, and so the holy child that’ll be born will be called God’s son. 36 Also, your relative Elisheva (Elizabeth; Grk. Elisabet) has also conceived a son in her old age—the one who was called barren is now six months pregnant 37 because with God, his statements always come to pass.”[ref]
38 “Listen,” said Maria, “I’m Yahweh’s servant girl. May everything you said come true.” Then the messenger left her.
1 In the beginning was the message,[fn][ref] and the message was with God, and the message was and is God. 2 He, the message, was with God even at the creation of the universe. 3 Everything came into existence through the messenger[fn]—there’s not even one thing that came into existence that wasn’t made by him.[ref] 4 He holds life, and that life is the light of humankind. 5 And that light is shining in the darkness, and darkness cannot overcome him.
6 A man arrived who had been sent by God. His name was Yohan (John; Grk. Yoannes).[ref] 7 He came as a testimony to tell about the light so that everyone would believe the light. 8 Yohan himself wasn’t the light—he was merely the announcer of the light. 9 The true light which enlightens every person was coming into the world.
10 He was in the world and he’s the creator of the world, and yet the world didn’t even know him. 11 He came to his own chosen people, but they wouldn’t accept him, 12 however anyone who would accept him and trusted in his authority, he gave them the right to become children of God—13 not physical children and not coming from human actions, but children of God.
14 And the message became a human and lived here among us and we saw his greatness[ref]—the greatness of an only child of the father—full of grace and truth.
15 Yohan (John; Grk. Yoannes) explained about him and loudly told everyone, “He’s the one I meant when I said, ‘There’s someone coming after me, yet who came before me, because he existed before I did!’ ”
16 Because he has so much, we all received grace and then even more grace. 17 The commands came to us through Mosheh (Moses), but grace and truth came to us through Yeshua (Jesus; Grk. Yesus) the messiah. 18 No one has ever actually seen God, but the human son born from God the father and in close touch with him, he was the one to explain God to us.
1:1 TD: This passage is complex to translate because the message was also the messenger—that is, Yeshua came not only to teach about getting saved, but also to become the actual pathway to be saved!
1:3 Lit. him.
24 But Toma (Thomas), one of the twelve (nicknamed ‘Twin’), wasn’t with them when Yeshua (Jesus; Grk. Yesus) had come 25 so the other apprentices told him, “We have seen the master.”
But he replied, “I won’t believe that unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and I can put my finger into the marks and can put my hand into the gash on his side.”
26 Eight days later, Yeshua’s apprentices were again together inside, and this time Toma was with them. 27 Yeshua came and stood in the middle of the room even though the doors were shut, and said, “Peace to you all.”
28 Toma spoke up, “My master and my god!”
29 “So you believe now because you’ve seen me,” said Yeshua. “The ones who haven’t seen me, but who believe anyway, will certainly be rewarded.”
30 Yeshua (Jesus; Grk. Yesus) went on to do many other miracles in front of his apprentices which aren’t recorded in this account. 31 But what has been written here has been recorded so that you might all believe that Yeshua is the messiah, God’s son, and then by believing, so that you might have true life through his power.
6 So in the same way that you all received the messiah, Yeshua (Jesus; Grk. Yesus) the master, keep living in him. 7 You’ve already been rooted in him and then built up and confirmed in the faith just as all of you were taught, and been very thankful.
8 Be careful in case anyone captures your minds with fancy ideas or theories without proof that come from human traditions or from worldly thinking, and not from Messiah. 9 Every component of the greatness of God lives in his human body, 10 and you also have been completed and are in him. He is the head of all rule and authority.
1 Long ago, God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets in many different circumstances and in many different ways, 2 but in these last days he spoke to us through his son who he appointed to inherit everything. It was also through him that he made the different eras—3 through the son who radiates the father’s splendour and represents his reality. The son bears everything by the message of his power, and after having made a way to be purified from our sins, he sat down in heaven next to God in the seat of the second-in-command.
4 By having become so much better than God’s messengers, he inherited a greater reputation than them, 5 because which of the messengers was told even once by God:
I gave birth to you today.’[ref]
And again:
And he will be a son to me.’[ref]
6 Then when God again brings his firstborn son into the world he said:
‘Let all of God’s messengers bow down to him.’[ref]
7 On one hand he said to his messengers:
‘The one making his messengers winds,
and making his ministers a fiery flame.’[ref]
8 And on the other hand to his son he said:
‘God, your throne will last to the end of the ages;
The ruler of his kingdom is a ruler of justice.
9 You loved righteousness and hated lawlessness,
because of this, God, your god, honoured you
with gladness beyond what your companions received.’[ref]
‘Yahweh, at the beginning you established the earth,
and you made the heavens with your hands.
11 They will perish but you will continue;
They will wear out like clothes do.
12 You will roll them up like a discarded dressing gown;
5 This is how you all who are also in Messiah Yeshua (Jesus; Grk. Yesus) should be thinking: 6 Yeshua, though he was in the form of God, didn’t take advantage of being considered equal with God, 7 but emptied himself and becoming like a human, took on the form of a slave. Then in that human form, 8 he humbled himself and became obedient all the way to death, even death on the stake. 9 That’s why God highly praised him and gave him authority over every other authority, 10 so that every being in heaven and earthly and underwater realms will bow when Yeshua is announced[ref] 11 ⇔and will honour God the father by testifying that Yeshua Messiah is Yahweh.
14 So because the ‘little children’ are all made of flesh and blood, he also became a man to be just like them, so that through his death, he could nullify the power of death (which comes from the devil) 15 and set free all those who in a lifetime ‘slavery’ controlled by the fear of death. 16 You can be certain that it’s not God’s messengers that he’s helped, but rather Avraham’s descendants.[ref] 17 That’s why he had to be just like his brothers and sisters, so that he could become the merciful and faithful chief priest representing God, in order to pay the price for the people’s sins. 18 Because he also suffered when he was tempted to sin, he’s able to help others who are tempted.
14 So then, having Yeshua (Jesus; Grk. Yesus) the son of God who came from and returned to the heavens as our high priest, we need to hold firmly to what we say we believe, 15 because we don’t have a high priest who’s not able to sympathise with our weakness, but rather who’s been tempted just like we are, yet he didn’t sin. 16 Therefore we can boldly approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and find grace to help us when we need it.
