David is making a conditional statement If not Yahweh, that sounds hypothetical, but he knows that the condition is not true. Yahweh was indeed for Israel, and therefore the disastrous results David goes on to describe did not happen. Use a natural form in your language for introducing a condition that the speaker believes is not true. Alternate translation: [If Yahweh had not been on our side]
