OET (OET-RV)Light shines in the darkness for the godly person.
⇔  That person is gracious, merciful, and just.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

זָ֘רַ֤ח בַּחֹ֣שֶׁךְ א֭וֹר לַיְשָׁרִ֑ים

dawns (Some words not found in UHB: dawns in,darkness light for,[people] gracious and, compassionate and, righteous )

Here, Light could be: (1) the subject of the verb shines as in the ULT, or (2) the object of the verb shines, and then the subject of the verb would be “he,” continuing the subject of the previous verse. Alternate translation: [He shines light in the darkness for the upright]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

זָ֘רַ֤ח בַּחֹ֣שֶׁךְ א֭וֹר לַיְשָׁרִ֑ים

dawns (Some words not found in UHB: dawns in,darkness light for,[people] gracious and, compassionate and, righteous )

The psalmist speaks of God blessing the upright person in difficult times as if his blessings were a light shining in darkness. Alternate translation: [The blessings that an upright person receives from God are like a light that shines in the darkness]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

חַנּ֖וּן וְרַח֣וּם וְצַדִּֽיק

gracious and, compassionate (Some words not found in UHB: dawns in,darkness light for,[people] gracious and, compassionate and, righteous )

The psalmist is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You can supply these words from the context if that would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: [such a person is gracious and compassionate and just]
