uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

יַגִּירֻ֥הוּ עַל־יְדֵי־חָ֑רֶב

(Some words not found in UHB: and,they to,devastation seek life_of,my they_went in,the_lower_parts_of the=earth/land )

The psalmist is using pour him into the hands of the sword as a common expression of the culture to mean “cause him to be killed by the sword.” If this phrase does not have that meaning for your readers, you could use a comparable expression from your language that does have that meaning, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [They will hand him over to be slain by the sword] or [They will cause him to die by the sword]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / personification

יְדֵי־חָ֑רֶב

(Some words not found in UHB: and,they to,devastation seek life_of,my they_went in,the_lower_parts_of the=earth/land )

The psalmist is speaking of the sword as if it were a living thing that could have hands. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [the destructive power of the sword] or [death by the sword]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

מְנָ֖ת שֻׁעָלִ֣ים יִהְיֽוּ

(Some words not found in UHB: and,they to,devastation seek life_of,my they_went in,the_lower_parts_of the=earth/land )

The psalmist is speaking of his enemies’ dead bodies as if they were a portion of jackals, that is, food that would be given to scavenging animals. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression from your culture or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [they will become food for wild animals]

Note 4 topic: translate-unknown

שֻׁעָלִ֣ים

(Some words not found in UHB: and,they to,devastation seek life_of,my they_went in,the_lower_parts_of the=earth/land )

A jackal is a kind of wild scavenging animal. If your readers would not be familiar with what a jackal is, you could use the name of a similar animal that your readers would recognize, or you could use a more general term. Alternate translation [scavengers]

Note 5 topic: writing-pronouns

יַגִּירֻ֥הוּ

(Some words not found in UHB: and,they to,devastation seek life_of,my they_went in,the_lower_parts_of the=earth/land )

The pronoun him is singular, but it refers to the psalmist’s enemies, who are plural. David may be referring to them collectively. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a plural form. Alternate translation: [them]
