uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / personification

שְׁלַח־אוֹרְךָ֣ וַ֭אֲמִתְּךָ הֵ֣מָּה יַנְח֑וּנִי יְבִיא֥וּנִי

(Some words not found in UHB: send_out light_of,your and,truth_of,your they(emph) may,they_lead_me may,they_bring_me to/towards mountain_of your_holiness_of,your and=near/to place(s)_of,your_dwelling )

The psalmist is speaking of God’s light and truth as if they were living things that God could Send out and that could lead the psalmist and bring him home. By your light, the psalmist probably means “the light of your face,” as in [4:6](../004/006.md). This represents God’s favor, as if God were smiling and looking brightly at someone. By faithfulness, the psalmist probably means God’s covenant faithfulness, as in [42:8](../042/008.md), that is, God’s commitment to fulfill the promises he has made to help people who are loyal to him. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [Extend your favor and faithfulness to me, and exhibit those qualities as you lead me. Exhibit those qualities in order to bring me]

Note 2 topic: writing-pronouns

הֵ֣מָּה יַנְח֑וּנִי

(Some words not found in UHB: send_out light_of,your and,truth_of,your they(emph) may,they_lead_me may,they_bring_me to/towards mountain_of your_holiness_of,your and=near/to place(s)_of,your_dwelling )

The psalmist is stating the pronoun them separately, even though the verb translated as let them lead me already includes this meaning. He is doing this because he is speaking of God’s light and faithfulness as if they were people and he wants to emphasize the personal role that he would like these qualities to take. If a speaker of your language would use an explicit pronoun for the same purpose, you may want to use that construction in your translation. If not, your language may have other ways of showing the meaning here. Alternate translation: [let them be the ones who lead me]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

אֶל־הַֽר־קָ֝דְשְׁךָ֗

to/towards mountain_of (Some words not found in UHB: send_out light_of,your and,truth_of,your they(emph) may,they_lead_me may,they_bring_me to/towards mountain_of your_holiness_of,your and=near/to place(s)_of,your_dwelling )

The psalmist is not using the possessive form to ascribe holiness to the mountain where God’s dwellings are located. Instead, he is using the possessive form to indicate that God consecrated or set apart this mountain as a place where he would dwell, that is, where he would be present in a special way in his temple. If a speaker of your language would not use the possessive form for this purpose, you could express this idea in another way. Alternate translation: [to the mountain that you have set apart] or [to the mountain that you have consecrated]

Note 4 topic: translate-plural

מִשְׁכְּנוֹתֶֽיךָ

(Some words not found in UHB: send_out light_of,your and,truth_of,your they(emph) may,they_lead_me may,they_bring_me to/towards mountain_of your_holiness_of,your and=near/to place(s)_of,your_dwelling )

The psalmist is using the plural form dwellings where he could have used the singular form, since the context indicates that he is referring to the temple in Jerusalem (“the house of God,” [42:4](../042/004.md), the location of “the altar of God,” [43:4](../043/004.md)). This suggests that he is using the plural form to emphasize the magnificence of the temple and especially its sacred character as a place where God is present in a special way. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use the singular and express the emphasis in another way. Alternate translation: [your sacred temple]
