52:5 Note: KJB: Ps.52.3

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: translate-tense

גַּם־אֵל֮ יִתָּצְךָ֪ לָ֫נֶ֥צַח יַחְתְּךָ֣ וְיִסָּחֲךָ֣ מֵאֹ֑הֶל וְשֵֽׁרֶשְׁךָ֨ מֵאֶ֖רֶץ חַיִּ֣ים

(Some words not found in UHB: love evil more,than_good lying more,than_speaking truth selah )

The verbs in this verse are in a form that Hebrew writers could use to express either a statement or a wish. It would be consistent with the usual pattern of an imprecatory psalm (see the introduction to this psalm) for David to express a wish at this point that God would judge and punish this wicked person. However, he may also be making a confident statement about what God will do. The original audience would have heard both nuances. Use the verbal form in your language that seems most suitable. Alternate translation: [May God also tear you down forever! May he take you away and tear you from the tent and uproot you from the land of the living!]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

גַּם־אֵל֮ יִתָּצְךָ֪

(Some words not found in UHB: love evil more,than_good lying more,than_speaking truth selah )

David is speaking of Doeg as if he were actually a building or wall that God would tear down. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [God will also destroy you]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / events

יַחְתְּךָ֣ וְיִסָּחֲךָ֣ מֵאֹ֑הֶל

(Some words not found in UHB: love evil more,than_good lying more,than_speaking truth selah )

David is describing one event before describing another event that would precede it. If it would be helpful your language, you may wish to relate these events in the order in which they would happen. Alternate translation: [He will tear you from the tent and take you away]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

יַחְתְּךָ֣ וְיִסָּחֲךָ֣ מֵאֹ֑הֶל

(Some words not found in UHB: love evil more,than_good lying more,than_speaking truth selah )

David is speaking as if Doeg were actually attached to or part of the tent in which he lived and as if God would physically tear him from the tent. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [He will remove you from the tent you live in and take you away]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

וְשֵֽׁרֶשְׁךָ֨

(Some words not found in UHB: love evil more,than_good lying more,than_speaking truth selah )

David is speaking as if Doeg were a plant that God would uproot from the soil. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [and remove you]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / nominaladj

מֵאֶ֖רֶץ חַיִּ֣ים

(Some words not found in UHB: love evil more,than_good lying more,than_speaking truth selah )

David is using the adjective living as a noun to mean a certain kind of person. Your language may use adjectives in the same way. If not, you can translate this adjective with an equivalent phrase. Alternate translation: [from the land of people who are alive]

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

מֵאֶ֖רֶץ חַיִּ֣ים

(Some words not found in UHB: love evil more,than_good lying more,than_speaking truth selah )

Here the land of the living represents the people who figuratively inhabit that land. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: [from among people who are alive]
