uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

He will cover you with his wings, and under his wings you will find refuge

(Some words not found in UHB: in/on/at/with,feathers_of,his cover to/for=you(fs) and,under wings_of,his find_refuge shield and,buckler faithfulness_of,his )

God’s protection is here referred to as “wings” which a bird uses to cover its’ young from danger. “Cover you with his wings” and “under his wings” mean basically the same thing. Alternate translation: “He will keep you safe and protect you” (See also: figs-parallelism)

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

His trustworthiness is a shield and protection

(Some words not found in UHB: in/on/at/with,feathers_of,his cover to/for=you(fs) and,under wings_of,his find_refuge shield and,buckler faithfulness_of,his )

God’s trustworthiness is here referred to as a “shield” which can protect people who rely on him. If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea behind the word trustworthiness, you could express the same idea with a verbal form such as “trust.” Alternate translation: “You can trust him to protect you” (See also: figs-abstractnouns)

protection

(Some words not found in UHB: in/on/at/with,feathers_of,his cover to/for=you(fs) and,under wings_of,his find_refuge shield and,buckler faithfulness_of,his )

No one knows for sure what this word means. This could mean: (1) a small shield strapped to the forearm that soldiers used to defend themselves against arrows and swords or (2) a wall of stones set in a circle inside which soldiers could hide and shoot arrows.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

91:4 The armor might refer to a body shield, while protection refers to a small shield worn on the arm.
