uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / genericnoun

עַל־שַׁ֣חַל וָפֶ֣תֶן תִּדְרֹ֑ךְ תִּרְמֹ֖ס כְּפִ֣יר וְתַנִּֽין

on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in (Some words not found in UHB: on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in lion and,a_cobra tread trample young_lion and,a_serpent )

The psalmist is not referring to a specific lion, adder, young lion, or serpent. He means such animals in general. It may be more natural in your language to express this meaning by using plural forms. Alternate translation: [You will tread on lions and adders; you will trample young lions and serpents]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

עַל־שַׁ֣חַל וָפֶ֣תֶן תִּדְרֹ֑ךְ תִּרְמֹ֖ס כְּפִ֣יר וְתַנִּֽין

on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in (Some words not found in UHB: on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in lion and,a_cobra tread trample young_lion and,a_serpent )

The psalmist may be using the terms tread and trample to mean “defeat.” People in this culture would force defeated enemies to lie down and then place a foot on top of them to show how completely they had defeated them. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [You will defeat any lion or adder that attacks you; yes, you will defeat any young lion or serpent that attacks you]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / hypo

עַל־שַׁ֣חַל וָפֶ֣תֶן תִּדְרֹ֑ךְ תִּרְמֹ֖ס כְּפִ֣יר וְתַנִּֽין

on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in (Some words not found in UHB: on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in lion and,a_cobra tread trample young_lion and,a_serpent )

The psalmist is using a hypothetical situation to help the individual he is addressing appreciate how Yahweh will protect him. Use a natural form in your language for expressing a hypothetical situation. To do that, it may be helpful to combine the two parallel phrases in this verse. Alternate translation: [Suppose a lion or a snake attacks you. Yahweh will enable you to defeat it, and it will not harm you] or [If a lion or a snake attacks you, you will defeat it and it will not harm you]
