uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

The mountains were covered with its shade, the cedars of God by its branches

(Some words not found in UHB: cleared_the_ground to/for,before_of,it and,took root_of,her and,filled land )

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “Its shade covered the mountains, its branches the cedars of God”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

the cedars of God by its branches

(Some words not found in UHB: cleared_the_ground to/for,before_of,it and,took root_of,her and,filled land )

“and the cedars of God were covered by its branches,” which copies the verb from the previous sentence. If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “and its branches covered the cedars of God” (See also: figs-activepassive)

cedars of God

(Some words not found in UHB: cleared_the_ground to/for,before_of,it and,took root_of,her and,filled land )

This could mean: (1) “the highest cedar trees,” the cedar trees that grew on the “mountains” in the land of Lebanon north of Israel, or (2) “God’s own cedar trees.”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

Ps 80 This psalm of lament might originate with the remnant of the northern kingdom after its fall in 722 BC. The people call on God as their Shepherd and as the God of Heaven’s Armies in the hope that he will return to them and restore them. They remember the Exodus and their special relationship with the Lord and conclude with an expression of renewed commitment to him (80:18).
