uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

You sweep them away as with a flood and they sleep

(Some words not found in UHB: sweep_~_away,them sleep are in/on/at/with,morning like_the,grass sprouts_anew )

God causing people to die suddenly is spoken of as if he swept them away with a broom. This sweeping is also spoken of as if it were a flood that carried people away. Alternate translation: “Lord, you destroy the people as with a flood and they die” (See also: figs-simile)

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / euphemism

they sleep

(Some words not found in UHB: sweep_~_away,them sleep are in/on/at/with,morning like_the,grass sprouts_anew )

This is a polite way of speaking of people dying.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

Ps 90 Although the Lord’s people have made their home in him for generations, their sin widens the gap between them and their infinite Lord. The Lord’s wrath against a person’s sin might last a lifetime and yet be only a taste of his displeasure with sin. This lamentable situation calls the community to seek the Lord’s light. Taking the first step means seeking restoration with the Lord on the basis of his compassion and love (90:13-14). He alone makes his servants glad and blesses their future generations (90:16-17).
