Here the psalmist is speaking of the difficulties God allowed as if God had tested them as a refiner tests metal. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [For you put us through difficulties to prove us]

The point of this comparison is that just as silver is purified by being heated in fire to remove impurities, so God allowed the people to go through difficulties to purify them. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make this point explicitly. Alternate translation: [you purified us through suffering just as a refiner purifies silver with fire]
