Here and in the next verse, David addresses this former companion directly, even though he knows cannot hear him. He is doing this to communicate to himself and to anyone who hears this song that he feels very strongly about how this former friend has betrayed him. If it would be helpful in your language, here and in the next verse you could translate what David says to this former friend as if he were speaking to other people about him. Alternate translation: [But it was a man according to my valuation, my companion and my acquaintance]

David is speaking as if someone had vowed both him and his former friend to God (as [Leviticus 27:1–8](../lev/27/01.md) describes) and a priest had determined that they had the same valuation. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [a man equal to me]

Since David was the king of Israel, this man could not have been his actual equal in rank. David is probably describing the regard in which he held this man. Alternate translation: [a man whom I esteemed as my equal]
