OET (OET-LV)May_it_be to_him/it[fn] like_a_garment which_he_wraps_himself and_to_a_waistband which_continually he_girds_it_on.

109:19 OSHB note: We read one or more accents in L differently than BHS. Often this notation indicates a typographical error in BHS.

OET (OET-RV)May his curses cling to him like the clothes he wears to cover himself—
⇔ like the belt he always wears.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / simile

תְּהִי־ל֭וֹ כְּבֶ֣גֶד יַעְטֶ֑ה

(Some words not found in UHB: be to=him/it like,a_garment wraps and,to,a_waistband every_day he,girds_it_on )

David is making a comparison between curses and clothing that someone wears. The point of this comparison is that just as clothing clings closely to a person’s body, so the curses should cling closely to his enemy. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make this point explicitly. Alternate translation: [May it wrap itself tightly to him like the clothing that he wears]

Note 2 topic: writing-pronouns

תְּהִי־ל֭וֹ כְּבֶ֣גֶד יַעְטֶ֑ה

(Some words not found in UHB: be to=him/it like,a_garment wraps and,to,a_waistband every_day he,girds_it_on )

The pronoun it refers to the cursing mentioned in the previous verse. It may be helpful to clarify this for your readers. Alternate translation: [May that cursing be to him like the clothing that he wears]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

וּ֝לְמֵ֗זַח

and,to,a_waistband

David is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You can supply these words from the context if that would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: [and may it be for him like the belt]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / simile

וּ֝לְמֵ֗זַח

and,to,a_waistband

David is making a comparison. The point of this comparison is that just as the belt is something that a person wears constantly, so the curse should cling to his enemy constantly. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make this point explicitly. Alternate translation: [and may it always be around him as the belt]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / explicitinfo

תָּמִ֥יד יַחְגְּרֶֽהָ

(Some words not found in UHB: be to=him/it like,a_garment wraps and,to,a_waistband every_day he,girds_it_on )

It might seem that the expression he always girds himself with it contains extra information that would not be natural to express in your language. If so, you could shorten it. Alternate translation: [he always girds himself with] or [with which he always girds himself]
